Animal Corner – The Arctic Wolf
Have you wondered how animals survive in the harsh environments, like in the Arctic? Today we’re going to talk about the Arctic wolf, who has adapted to live in one of the harshest climates on earth. The Arctic wolf lives in the Arctic Circle, where it is freezing or below freezing all of the time. Pretty intense, huh!
How do they do it? They put on a special winter coat and have other special adaptations that allow them to live in the cold. One of these adaptations is their shorter legs. Their shorter legs reduce exposure to the bitter cold. They also have smaller ears, which help them better control their body heat, and extra fur in special places, like between the pads on their paws. All these special adaptations allow them to survive and thrive in the most unimaginable of temperatures.
While it does get pretty cold here in Missouri, we are pretty far from the Arctic Circle! Even so, we still have an Arctic wolf you can come visit the next time you are near Springfield, MO.
