Animal Corner – The Black Bear
Did you know that a black bear do not necessarily have to have black fur, despite its name? That’s right, black bears can also be brown, blue, gray, and even cinnamon! These bears are the most common in North America. As a matter of fact, they can be found in nearly any forested area. You can also find them living in mountainous and swampy areas. Black bears are omnivorous, so they eat nearly anything they find: berries grasses, roots, and fish, especially!
Black bears can weigh between 200 and 600 pounds. Their weight can fluctuate quite a bit due to hibernation. They eat huge amounts of food in the months leading up to winter, and then lose the weight when food is scarce. While seeing a black bear may not exactly be high on your to-do list, seeing them safely at Wild Animal Safari should definitely be high on that list!
