Animal Corner – Ostriches
Ostriches are among the most recognizable birds in the world! Their large size, long necks, and peculiar bodily features are definitely responsible for that. Their significant height keeps them from being able to fly. In fact, they are the largest bird species currently living. These birds are so large, they even lay the largest eggs. A typical ostrich egg weighs over three pounds!
Contrary to what many believe, ostriches do not bury their heads in the sand when they are threatened. Rather, they can lie close to the ground and not fully in the sand. In certain cases, these birds can simply choose to run away. Their legs are quite strong, helping them reach speeds up to 45 miles per hour. That leg strength is helpful for those ostriches that would rather kick to defend themselves!
In captivity, ostriches often live up to 60 years. You can come see the ostriches in our drive-thru. If you are going to feed them, then remember to shield your feed bag and instead toss the food at them. Those long necks mean they can easily reach over and steal all the food! Food prices can be found here. See you soon, and our ostriches hope you have that food with you!
